Overview –
A patent attribute of the St. Joseph’s College, Trichy is social responsibility and care for the community. Most colleges endeavor to make a positive contribution to the underprivileged communities by supporting a wide range of socio-economic and primarily, educational initiatives. Here is another project from St. Joseph’s College; we’ve called it JASS - Joseph’s Academy of Soft Skills. An initiative that addresses several human resources issues as plain as hire and progression. Education, does it meet the corporate needs or is it another certificate?
Facts -
India still produces plenty of engineers about 400,000 a year. But a Nasscom study found only one in four engineering graduates was employable. The rest were deficient in the required technical skills, fluency in English or ability to work in a team or deliver basic oral presentations.
JASS Approach -
Study revealed gaps that need to be packed with a two dimensional approach.
One, preparation of fresh graduates with employability skills which just don’t comprise areas such as successfully cracking interviews or writing resumes but several other programs that provide a realistic experience to our students. They may vary from simple salary planning to negotiations.
Two, involve the corporate in our cycle which ensures clarity pertaining to the gaps they currently face. This approach has assisted us in further refining our programs as per the industry requirements.
We would like to tell you about the Joseph’s Academy of Soft Skills [JASS] at St. Joseph’s College, Trichy. A 165 year old college which was the origin of eminent leaders such as Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. JASS’s first priority is to ensure Employability. Ensuring our students complete their courses successfully and, at the same time, develop and mature is our aim. The course modules are designed in order to make sure that they are studying for the correct qualifications to meet their future careers aspirations. They will have a faculty who will monitor their progress and help them produce their own Individualized Learning Plan.
We want the students to take advantage of all the rich opportunities the academy offers. Finding ways to make studying exciting is very important. The academy’s specialism in creativity and lateral thinking modules allows us to be ambitious, creative and sustain excellence. This in itself generates interest, enthusiasm and success.
